Have you ever felt like not doing anything and just keeping on procrastinating? Well, I have. Sometimes, I just search for things to distract myself, and I think it's pretty common. The human brain is not designed to work productively, especially when we have become slaves to the technology surrounding us. Whenever my phone beeps, I suddenly get curious. Even if I am working on a really important task, I lose control and check my phone, and believe me, when it's some useless notification, which is the case most of the time, I get really angry with my phone, especially myself. So in a few seconds, I go from the state of flow, which I am gonna explain soon, to a state of anger.
What is the state of flow?
In general, the state of flow is when you are really focused on something and working on it with full concentration. Unlike relationships where the problem arises after you are into it, in the case of flow state, the most difficult task is getting into it. Once you have attained the flow state, the law of inertia comes into play and will help you in continuing in the state unless you distract yourself. The distraction works as a force and draws your focus and energy from flow state to somewhere else, somewhere less productive.
How do you get into the state of flow?
This can vary from person to person. For me, it's sitting on my work chair, with my laptop right in front of me on the desk and having a hot cup of black coffee right next to it. After having a few sips and typing or reading something important, I get into the state of flow.
The biggest hurdle is to perform the tasks I just mentioned. You might have noticed that when you start writing, it's the initial few lines that are difficult to write, and once you have passed that phase, you get into the state of flow, and it becomes easy to continue. You start having superhuman ideas, and you just want it every single time you work. If you know what the one thing is that gets you to the state of flow, you can easily hack your brain into doing any difficult task. It's all about the initial resistance, and once you have overcome it, it becomes easy naturally.
If you wanna know more about it, check out the book called 'Flow' by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
Thanks for reading.
